The Hidden Impact of Cigarette Butts

Part of a Global Movement

On July 4, Gran Canaria joins the worldwide No More Plastic Butts Daycampaign. Together with Maria Koijck, The Petty Foundation, Oceans4Life, the European Solidarity Corps, local volunteers and environmental partners, we are taking action against cigarette butt pollution.

Through clean-ups, awareness campaigns and community action, we help create a cleaner and healthier Gran Canaria for people, nature and future generations

Small Waste - Big Impact

Discover how cigarette butts pollute our environment and why we remove them every week across Gran Canaria.

Every cigarette butt left on the ground may seem insignificant, but together they are one of the most common forms of litter found worldwide. Most cigarette filters contain plastic and can remain in the environment for many years, slowly breaking down into microplastics that contaminate soil, waterways and marine ecosystems.

Thousands Collected

Millions Still Out There

The Most Littered Item on Earth

Every year, trillions of cigarette butts are discarded worldwide. Many people do not realize that cigarette filters are made of plastic and can remain in nature for many years. When left on streets, beaches, parks and natural areas, they slowly break down into microplastics and release harmful chemicals into the environment.

What looks like a small piece of litter can have a much bigger impact than most people think.

Why We Take Action

A discarded cigarette butt can:

  • Release toxic chemicals into soil and water
  • Break down into microplastics
  • Harm wildlife and marine ecosystems
  • Pollute beaches, streets, parks and natural areas
  • Be carried by rainwater into rivers and the ocean

Turning Awareness Into Action

  • Raise awareness through clean-up actions
  • Connect art, education and environmental action
  • Inspire responsible behaviour and positive change
  • Engage communities in protecting nature
  • Turn collected waste into powerful awareness projects

Many cigarette butts never reach a bin.
Instead, they travel through drains, streets and waterways before ending up in the natural environment

Hope Begins With Action

The good news is that this pollution is preventable

Every cigarette butt properly disposed of, every clean-up action and every person who chooses to care makes a difference.

Through awareness, education and community action, we can reduce cigarette butt pollution, protect our natural spaces and create cleaner, healthier environments for future generations.

Together, small actions can lead to big change.
